Classroom strategies (cognition and learning)
Resources for schools
Children and young people with cognition and learning difficulties have poor working memory and auditory memory skills. Therefore repeat, revisit and recap tasks on a regular basis. Rate of learning and the consolidation of basic concepts will be slow. Use multi- sensory approaches to teaching and learning with an emphasis on visual and 'hands on' learning. All work should be differentiated at an appropriate level and delivered at a suitable pace. Positively reinforce the child or young person's efforts in learning tasks and activities. Remember to give as much attention to effort as to achievement.
