Definitions and glossary (deaf and hearing)

We are the service within Cumbria Children's Services that is staffed by Teachers of the Deaf ( TODs - additionally qualified teachers who are specially trained in working with deaf children and young people and their families) and Higher Level Teaching Assistants - sensory (HLTAs).

We use the word 'deaf' to cover all levels of hearing loss, both temporary and permanent. Some children and families are more comfortable with some words than others when describing their own deafness or hearing loss. We aim to be sensitive to this.
