Community specialist paediatric bladder and bowel service

The Children’s Community Bladder and Bowel Team in Cumbria are a nurse led service providing support for children and young people with complex bladder and bowel conditions.

We accept referrals from health and education professionals for children and young people with complex bladder and bowel conditions.

The team provide advice, care plans and treatment to children registered with a GP within the boundaries of Cumbria.

Children and young people referred to our service will have had a minimum of 3 months support from a school nurse or health visitor with lifestyle, toileting, basic fluid and fibre advice (Tier 1 advice).

We provide assessment, treatment, support and advice to children and young people from with the following issues:

  • Daytime wetting or bladder issues such as frequency and urgency (from 3.5 years).
  • Constipation and soiling (from 1 year).
  • Children with night time wetting (from 5 year).
  • Children who are currently unable to become toilet trained: following a thorough assessment and having undertaken a toilet training programme for 6 months.
  • All children should have a physical examination from a medically trained health care professional.  GP, paediatrician, advance nurse practitioner.
